Apple Approves Spotify Update Allowing US Users to Buy Audiobooks In-App
Spotify has announced that Apple has approved a new app update, enabling iPhone users in the U.S. to purchase audiobooks directly within the Spotify app. This update also allows users to view audiobook prices and easily buy additional listening hours beyond the initial 15 hours, marking a significant improvement in user experience (Source: Spotify Newsroom).
According to Spotify, “This change lowers the barriers for more users to embrace their first — or tenth — audiobook, while allowing publishers and authors to reach fans and access new audiences seamlessly.” The ability to purchase audiobooks and top-ups directly within the app simplifies the process for users, making it more convenient to enjoy audio content.
This update follows a recent U.S. court ruling that ordered Apple to stop charging fees on purchases made outside of the App Store. This ruling has paved the way for Spotify to offer in-app purchases without incurring additional costs, benefiting both the company and its users.
Previously, iPhone users had to purchase audiobooks on the web before accessing them within the app. Spotify removed audiobook purchases in 2022 due to Apple’s strict rules around in-app purchases (Source: The Verge). Now, users can complete their purchases with just a few taps within the Spotify app.
In addition to purchasing audiobooks, iPhone users can now also buy additional listening hours, or “top-ups,” directly within the app. Each top-up costs $13 for 10 additional hours. This eliminates the need for users to visit the web to extend their listening time (Source: Spotify Support).
Earlier this month, Apple approved another Spotify update that allowed iPhone users to purchase subscriptions outside the App Store, providing access to pricing information and external payment links (Source: TechCrunch). These changes reflect a broader shift in Apple’s policies, offering more flexibility to app developers and enhancing the user experience.
