Google Invests $150M in Warby Parker for AI-Powered Smart Glasses
Google is making a significant push into the smart glasses market, announcing a commitment of up to $150 million to Warby Parker to co-develop AI-powered smart glasses. The announcement was made at Google I/O 2025, highlighting the company’s ambitions in the Android XR space.
The collaboration will leverage Warby Parker’s expertise in eyewear design and retail with Google’s AI and AR technology. Google has initially committed $75 million towards product development and commercialization costs, according to a press release from Warby Parker. The additional $75 million investment, which includes an equity stake in Warby Parker, is contingent upon the eyewear company achieving specific milestones.
This isn’t Google’s only foray into smart glasses. At Google I/O 2025, the company also announced partnerships with other companies, including Samsung and Gentle Monster, to create smart glasses powered by Gemini AI and AR capabilities. These partnerships signal a broad strategy to establish Android XR as a leading platform for wearable AI technology.
Google appears to be drawing inspiration from Meta’s successful partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the maker of Ray-Ban. The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have gained traction due to their appealing design and availability in Ray-Ban stores. By partnering with Warby Parker, Google aims to replicate this success by combining advanced technology with fashionable and accessible eyewear.
Warby Parker and Google plan to launch a series of products, with the first line of eyewear expected to debut after 2025. These glasses will incorporate multimodal AI and will be available in both prescription and non-prescription options, catering to a wide range of users.
