X Tests Highlighting Posts Liked by Users with Opposing Views

X (formerly Twitter) is experimenting with a new feature designed to highlight posts that resonate across different viewpoints. Announced on Thursday, the initiative leverages the platform’s Community Notes feature to identify content liked by users who typically hold opposing views [1].

The experiment involves a subset of Community Notes contributors who will receive prompts to rate and provide feedback on certain posts. These prompts are triggered based on the initial ‘Like’ activity of the post.

X aims to use this feedback to develop an open-source algorithm capable of pinpointing posts that bridge diverse perspectives.

Contributors will be asked to evaluate what they appreciate and dislike about the posts, with options such as “I learned something interesting” or “I don’t agree with it” to guide their feedback.

“People often feel the world is divided, yet Community Notes shows people can agree, even on contentious topics,” X stated in a post. “This experimental new feature seeks to uncover ideas, insights, and opinions that bridge perspectives. It can bring awareness to what resonates broadly. It could motivate people to share those ideas in the first place. Ultimately, it could help move the world forward in ways that the people want.”

X launched Community Notes in 2022 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform, shifting away from traditional fact-checking methods [2]. The feature has since gained traction and has been adopted by Meta for use on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads [3].
