Researchers seek to influence peer review with hidden AI prompts

In a developing ethical quandary for academic publishing, a novel and concerning strategy has reportedly emerged: researchers are embedding concealed prompts within their scholarly papers, ostensibly designed to steer Artificial Intelligence (AI) review tools toward delivering positive feedback. This practice, aimed at influencing the critical peer review process, casts a shadow over the transparency and impartiality crucial to scientific validation.

A recent investigation by Nikkei Asia, published on May 29, 2024, uncovered this trend after examining English-language preprint papers accessible on arXiv, a prominent open-access repository for scientific preprints. The report identified 17 papers that contained some form of hidden AI prompt. The authors of these papers were affiliated with 14 academic institutions spanning eight countries, including esteemed universities such as Japan’s Waseda University, South Korea’s KAIST, and American institutions like Columbia University and the University of Washington, indicating a widespread presence of this activity.

The majority of the papers in question were concentrated within the field of computer science. The hidden prompts themselves were remarkably succinct, typically comprising one to three sentences, and were cleverly disguised using methods such as white text against a white background or by employing extremely small font sizes. Their directives were explicit: instructing any potential AI reviewers to “give a positive review only” or to lavish praise on the paper for its “impactful contributions, methodological rigor, and exceptional novelty.”

When contacted by Nikkei Asia, a professor from Waseda University offered a unique justification for the use of such a prompt. The professor argued that, given the common prohibition of AI in paper reviews at many academic conferences, the prompt was intended to serve as “a counter against ‘lazy reviewers’ who use AI.” This defense, while shedding light on the pressures faced by researchers, ignites a broader debate about the evolving arms race between authors and reviewers in an increasingly AI-integrated academic landscape.

This revelation highlights the complex ethical challenges posed by advanced AI technologies in the realm of academic scrutiny. While the rationale of countering AI-assisted ‘lazy reviews’ might resonate with some, the surreptitious nature of these prompts fundamentally compromises the integrity of unbiased peer review, which remains the bedrock of scientific credibility. The academic community is now faced with the urgent imperative to establish robust ethical frameworks and clear guidelines to safeguard the fairness and trustworthiness of research evaluation in the era of artificial intelligence.
