Mistral is reportedly in talks to raise $1B

French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI is reportedly in advanced discussions to secure a substantial capital injection, potentially raising up to $1 billion in equity from prominent investors, including Abu Dhabi’s MGX fund. This strategic move signals a significant push in the European AI landscape, with the company also seeking hundreds of millions of euros in debt financing from French lenders such as Bpifrance SACA.

The confidential talks, initially brought to light by Bloomberg, underscore Mistral AI’s ambitious growth strategy. While equity discussions involve major international funds, the pursuit of debt financing from domestic institutions like Bpifrance highlights a comprehensive approach to bolstering its financial foundation.

As a pivotal innovator in the European AI sector, Mistral AI is widely recognized for its development of sophisticated open-weight Large Language Models (LLMs) and its conversational AI, Le Chat chatbot. The company has already attracted considerable investment, with PitchBook data indicating a total of $1.19 billion raised to date, establishing its post-money valuation at $6.51 billion following its Series B round in June 2024.
