AWS is launching an AI agent marketplace next week with Anthropic as a partner

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is set to launch a dedicated AI agent marketplace next week, marking a significant development in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence. TechCrunch has exclusively reported that AI powerhouse Anthropic will be a key partner in this new venture.

The highly anticipated AWS agent marketplace is scheduled to debut at the AWS Summit in New York City on July 15. This move is poised to reshape how businesses discover and deploy advanced AI capabilities, centralizing access to AI agents for a wide range of enterprise customers.

AI agents, often described as computer programs capable of making decisions and performing tasks autonomously using a backend AI model, have become a focal point for innovation and investment across Silicon Valley. While the exact definition can sometimes be ambiguous, their utility in automating complex processes and interacting with software independently is widely recognized. Major AI developers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are actively promoting AI agents as the next frontier in technology.

However, a significant challenge has been the fragmented distribution of these agents, with many companies offering them in isolated silos. AWS’s new marketplace aims to directly address this issue. By creating a centralized hub, AWS will enable AI startups to offer their agents directly to AWS customers. This streamlined approach will also allow enterprise clients to efficiently browse, install, and select AI agents based on their specific operational requirements from a single, unified platform.

For Anthropic, a company that already enjoys substantial backing from Amazon and is reportedly in line for further multi-billion dollar investments, this partnership presents a considerable advantage. Anthropic views the future of AI predominantly through the lens of agents and has been actively building agents in-house while also enabling developers to create them using its API. The AWS marketplace will significantly expand Anthropic’s reach, allowing it to engage more customers, including those who might currently utilize agents from competitors like OpenAI. This expanded exposure could also attract more developers to leverage Anthropic’s API, potentially boosting its revenue, which had already reached an impressive $3 billion in annualized revenue by late May.

Following a standard marketplace model, AWS will earn a percentage of the revenue generated by startups from agent installations. While AWS will take a cut, the potential for startups to unlock new revenue streams and attract a broader customer base through this platform is expected to far outweigh the commission. The pricing structure is anticipated to resemble that of SaaS offerings, allowing startups to charge customers directly for their specialized agents.

AWS is not the first tech giant to establish an AI agent marketplace. Google Cloud launched its own AI Agent Marketplace in April, providing a platform for developers and businesses to list, buy, and sell AI agents. Microsoft followed suit a month later with its “Agent Store” within Microsoft 365 Copilot. Similarly, enterprise software leaders like Salesforce and ServiceNow have also introduced their own agent marketplaces. The success of these platforms, particularly for smaller AI startups and enterprises seeking highly specialized AI agents, remains a key area of observation as the market evolves.
