Belkin ends support for most Wemo devices and its Wemo app

In a significant announcement that will impact countless smart home users, consumer electronics giant Belkin has declared its intention to cease technical support for the majority of its older Wemo products and discontinue the associated Wemo app, effective January 31, 2026. This decision marks a pivotal moment for users who have integrated Wemo devices into their daily routines.

The comprehensive list of affected devices is extensive, spanning a wide array of smart home categories. It includes various smart plugs, light switches, smart bulbs, baby monitors, kitchen appliances, heaters, air purifiers, and motion sensors. Beyond the specified date, Belkin will no longer offer technical support, firmware updates, software updates, or troubleshooting assistance for these products. Any features that rely on cloud connectivity, such as remote access or voice integrations, will also cease to function.

Explaining its decision in an email to customers, Belkin stated the need to realign its strategic focus. “Over the last decade, since Belkin first launched Wemo in 2011, we’ve been committed to providing consumers with innovative, simple-to-use accessories for a seamless smart home experience. However, as technology evolves, we must focus our resources on different parts of the Belkin business,” the company communicated, acknowledging the potential disruption with an apology for the inconvenience.

For products still under warranty by the end-of-life date, Belkin indicates they may be eligible for a partial refund. Importantly, Wemo products configured for use with Apple’s HomeKit will continue to function even without Wemo’s cloud services and the dedicated Wemo app. Specifically, Wemo’s Thread-based products (SKUs WLS0503, WDC010, WSC010, WSP100) are exempt from this discontinuation and will maintain their current functionality through Apple HomeKit.

This move by Belkin is not an isolated incident but rather indicative of a growing trend in the smart home industry. Companies are increasingly opting to discontinue support for older devices, often citing the need to refocus resources on more profitable ventures or newer technologies, even when existing products remain fully functional. Google, for instance, recently made a similar announcement regarding its earlier generations of Nest Learning Thermostats.

Google revealed in April that its first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats would no longer be supported as of October 25, 2025. This means their connected features will be shut off, updates will cease, and they will lose compatibility with the Nest and Google Home apps, effectively becoming ‘dumb’ devices. While companies often offer incentives for users to upgrade to newer models, such forced obsolescence can understandably frustrate customers who prefer to continue using their existing, working devices.

For those who have heavily invested in the Wemo ecosystem to automate their homes, Belkin’s decision presents a significant challenge and potential frustration, especially if they do not qualify for a partial refund. The impact goes beyond mere inconvenience, affecting foundational aspects of daily living for some users whose smart devices have become integral to their homes.

Belkin provided a comprehensive list of affected devices, confirming the wide array of smart home products spanning multiple categories that will lose support.
