Enterprises prefer Anthropic’s AI models over anyone else’s, including OpenAI’s

In a significant shift within the artificial intelligence landscape, AI research lab Anthropic has emerged as the preferred choice for enterprises, surpassing industry giant OpenAI. This development marks a notable reversal in market dynamics, positioning Anthropic’s AI models at the forefront of business adoption.

According to a comprehensive report by Menlo Ventures, Anthropic now commands an impressive 32% of the enterprise large language model (LLM) market share by usage. This places them ahead of OpenAI, which holds the second-largest share among enterprises with 25%.

This ascendancy represents a dramatic change from just two years prior. In 2023, OpenAI dominated the enterprise sector with a 50% market share, while Anthropic held a mere 12%. The recent data clearly illustrates a sharp decline for OpenAI in this segment and a steady, significant rise for Anthropic over the same period. Meanwhile, Google has also observed an increase in enterprise usage for its AI models.

Anthropic’s leadership is even more pronounced in the realm of coding. The company boasts a commanding 42% of the enterprise market share for coding-related AI usage, making it the clear leader by a substantial margin. For comparison, OpenAI garnered 21% of the overall market share in coding, making Anthropic’s usage more than double that of its competitor.

The foundation for Anthropic’s remarkable surge in enterprise adoption was primarily laid with the release of its Claude 3.5 Sonnet model in June 2024. This momentum was further accelerated by the subsequent launch of Claude 3.7 Sonnet in February 2025, which continued to solidify its position in the enterprise ecosystem.

These findings from Menlo Ventures corroborate widespread anecdotal evidence and industry discussions suggesting a growing preference among enterprise and startup developers for Claude over OpenAI’s ChatGPT for business-critical applications. While Anthropic gains ground in the enterprise space, OpenAI maintains a strong presence on the consumer front, reporting last week that ChatGPT users send over 2.5 billion prompts daily.

The Menlo Ventures report also highlights a distinct preference among enterprises for closed AI models, which are utilized by both Anthropic and OpenAI. Over half of the surveyed enterprises indicated they do not use open-source models at all. As of mid-year 2025, only 13% of enterprise daily workloads incorporate open-source models, a decrease from 19% at the beginning of the year. Within the open-source sector, Meta continues to hold a dominant position.
