
Google Cloud Outage Cripples Internet Services, Impacting Spotify, Discord, and More
A widespread Google Cloud outage on Thursday brought down significant portions of the internet, disrupting numerous online services and applications. The disruption impacted a variety of platforms, ranging from global cloud infrastructure provider Cloudflare to popular apps such as Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, and Character.AI.
Google Cloud initiated an investigation into the service issues affecting its customers at 11:46 a.m. PT. According to their official status page, mitigations were implemented by 2:23 p.m. PT, with services expected to be fully restored within the following hour. “We are currently investigating a service disruption to some Google Cloud services,” confirmed Google Cloud spokesperson Devon Smiley in a statement to TechCrunch.
Cloudflare also reported investigating service disruptions affecting its users at 11:19 a.m. PT, according to their status page. By 12:12 p.m. PT, Cloudflare indicated initial signs of service recovery after investigating the root cause.
“This is a Google Cloud outage,” stated Cloudflare spokesperson Ripley Park in an email to TechCrunch. “A limited number of services at Cloudflare use Google Cloud and were impacted. We expect them to come back shortly. The core Cloudflare services were not impacted.”
The effects of the outage were felt across a range of popular applications. DownDetector, a crowdsourced reporting platform, documented thousands of user reports indicating outages on Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, and Character.AI. Additionally, AI coding applications like Cursor and Replit also experienced downtime.
Replit’s CEO, Amjad Masad, acknowledged the Google Cloud outage’s impact on their services via Twitter:
Spotify spokesperson Shira Rimini confirmed they were actively monitoring Google Cloud’s status page for real-time updates.
An AWS spokesperson confirmed they were not experiencing any service disruptions. Microsoft Azure has also not reported any outages on its official channels.
The outage, commencing around 11 a.m. PT, disrupted the workday for a significant number of users in the United States. Service disruptions of this magnitude are typically resolved within a few hours, and services are anticipated to be restored shortly.
