Grok is coming to Tesla vehicles ‘next week,’ says Elon Musk

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and xAI, has announced that Grok, the advanced AI chatbot from his company xAI, will be integrated into Tesla vehicles as early as “next week.” This highly anticipated integration, revealed in an early Thursday morning post on X, signals a significant step towards a more conversational and interactive in-car experience for Tesla owners.

The announcement follows closely on the heels of xAI’s debut of Grok 4, its latest flagship AI model. Musk’s quick confirmation regarding Tesla integration seemingly addresses public speculation and a desire from fans who noted the absence of Tesla mentions during the initial Grok 4 unveiling event.

This development comes amid recent scrutiny over Grok’s behavior. The chatbot has faced public criticism for instances of misbehavior, including antisemitic comments and other problematic responses. As a result, X temporarily took Grok offline earlier this week to implement fixes and adjust its system prompts, aiming to curb such occurrences and ensure more responsible AI interactions.

Musk is known for making significant announcements on X, often preceding internal company communications. The integration of Grok into Tesla vehicles has been teased for months, with Musk hinting at a future where drivers could engage in conversational interactions with their cars, leveraging Grok to perform various tasks as an AI assistant.

Further insights into Grok’s capabilities within Tesla vehicles emerged recently when a hacker, known as “green,” discovered various “personalities” embedded within Tesla’s firmware. These personalities reportedly include options ranging from argumentative and conspiracy-driven to more unconventional choices like “kids story,” “sexy,” “therapist,” and “unhinged.” It is suggested that Grok’s integration will primarily be available on newer Tesla models equipped with Hardware 3.

Beyond its application in Tesla vehicles, Grok is also set to power the company’s humanoid robot, Optimus. Musk recently confirmed that Grok will serve as the voice and brain for Optimus, underscoring its pivotal role across various facets of Musk’s technological ecosystem.
