How to Use Instagram Map and Protect Your Privacy
Instagram has officially launched its new “Instagram Map” feature, a tool designed to allow U.S. users to share their most recent active location and discover location-based content, drawing comparisons to Snap Map. However, the rollout has prompted some user confusion regarding privacy settings. In response, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has clarified that location sharing is strictly opt-in and not automatically activated, reassuring users that their location is only visible if they explicitly choose to share it.
Mosseri addressed concerns circulating on social media, which incorrectly suggested that location sharing is enabled by default. He highlighted that the feature requires double consent by design, meaning users must confirm their intent to share location data. He explained that much of the confusion arises when users see their own location on the map upon opening the feature, leading them to believe others can see it too. Mosseri also noted that the map displays location tags from recently posted Stories or Reels that include tagged locations, which are visible regardless of a user’s personal location-sharing status.
Understanding How Instagram Map Works
It’s important to understand that Instagram Map updates your location only when the app is open or running in the background. This differs from Snap Map, which offers options for continuous, real-time location updates. Importantly, even if you choose to keep your location sharing turned off, you will still be able to see your friends’ shared locations and discover content tagged to specific places.
The feature makes it easier to access location information, which was previously visible through location tags in Stories and Reels. This might prompt users to reconsider tagging their current location in their posts, especially if they are still present at that location.
How to Access Instagram Map
To begin using the Instagram Map feature, navigate to your Direct Messages (DMs) page. You will find a new “Map” option at the top of the screen. For first-time users, a pop-up message will appear, informing you about the new Map and confirming that no one can see your location until you explicitly share it. The pop-up also reminds you that these settings can be changed at any time.
How to Set Your Location-Sharing Preferences
When you first open the Map, you will see a page titled “Who can see your location.” From here, you can select your audience. Your options include sharing your location with your “Friends” (followers you follow back), your “Close Friends” list, specific “Select users,” or choosing “No one.”
To modify these preferences at any point, go to your profile. Tap the settings icon located in the top-right corner, select the “Story, live and location” option, and then tap “Location sharing.” This section allows you to adjust who can see your location on the map.
Discovering Content and Features on the Map
Once you open the app, the map will display the locations of friends who have chosen to share their location with you. Additionally, you can discover location-based Stories and Reels from people you follow. For example, you might see highlights from a nearby festival or discover new local restaurants recommended by creators.
The map also supports “Notes,” short, ephemeral messages that previously appeared at the top of your DM feed. With the new Map feature, these Notes can now be shared on the map itself if they are associated with a specific location, enabling location-specific communication and discovery.
