OpenAI Explores ‘Sign in with ChatGPT’ for Third-Party Apps
OpenAI is exploring a new feature that would allow users to sign in to third-party applications using their ChatGPT accounts. The company has published a web page seeking interest from developers who may want to integrate this “Sign in with ChatGPT” service into their apps.
With ChatGPT boasting approximately 600 million monthly active users, OpenAI appears keen to leverage its platform’s popularity to expand into areas like online shopping, social media, and personal devices. The potential “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature could position OpenAI to compete directly with tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, offering users a streamlined way to access various online services.
Earlier this month, OpenAI launched a preview of the “Sign in with ChatGPT” experience for developers in Codex CLI, its open-source AI coding tool. This feature allows developers to connect their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to their API accounts. As an incentive, OpenAI offered Plus users $5 in API credits and Pro users $50 in API credits for utilizing the sign-in feature.
The company’s interest in broad integration is evident from its developer interest form, which inquires about the size of potential app’s user base, ranging from under 1,000 to over 100 million weekly users. It also probes into their current AI feature monetization strategies and whether they are existing OpenAI API customers.
CEO Sam Altman hinted in 2023 at the possibility of a “Sign in with OpenAI” feature in 2024. Now, in 2025, the company appears to be actively developing this capability. However, the launch timeline and the number of participating companies remain unclear.
OpenAI has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding this development.
