OpenAI says ChatGPT is on track to reach 700M weekly users

ChatGPT’s impressive growth as a consumer app continues, with the artificial intelligence chatbot on track to hit an astounding 700 million weekly active users this week, the company has announced.

This significant milestone follows the app’s earlier achievement of reaching 500 million weekly active users by the end of March. Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and head of the ChatGPT app, shared this data via a post on X, noting that the application has experienced a remarkable 4x growth since last year.

“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems. Big week ahead. Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and delivering on our mission so everyone can benefit from AI,” Turley stated in his post.

The surge in the app’s popularity has been partly attributed to the launch of an upgraded image-generation feature in March, powered by the advanced GPT-4 model. Following this enhancement, OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap, revealed that over 130 million users had generated more than 700 million images within just a few days of its release.

The company has also seen a substantial increase in its subscriber base. Lightcap recently reported that ChatGPT now boasts 5 million paying business users, a notable jump from the 3 million recorded in June.

Further underscoring its widespread adoption, a recent report from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower indicated that users engage with ChatGPT for more than 12 days a month on average, placing it second only to Google and X in user retention frequency. The report also found that during the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes per day on the ChatGPT application.
