Uber and Waymo’s commercial robotaxi service is open for business in Atlanta
Atlanta commuters can now experience the future of transportation as Uber and Waymo officially launch their commercial robotaxi service in the city. This expansion marks a significant milestone in autonomous vehicle (AV) deployment, building on the successful “Waymo on Uber” service already established in Austin.
The newly launched service in Atlanta will initially cover an approximate 65-square-mile area, bringing Waymo’s self-driving vehicles directly to Uber users. This strategic partnership is set to accelerate the growth of both companies in the booming autonomous mobility sector. Uber boasts an impressive annual run-rate of 1.5 million mobility and delivery AV trips across its network, underpinned by collaborations with 18 autonomous vehicle firms. Similarly, Waymo is a leader in robotaxi services, providing 250,000 paid rides weekly across key markets including Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.
The addition of Atlanta to this growing list is expected to significantly boost these figures. Waymo’s fleet in Atlanta currently consists of dozens of vehicles, with plans for a substantial expansion over time. The combined fleet shared between Atlanta and Austin is projected to grow into the hundreds, signaling a strong commitment to scaling operations.
The “Waymo on Uber” service operates as a unique hybrid model, seamlessly integrating robotaxis with human-driven vehicles. Uber users can adjust their app preferences to increase their chances of being matched with a Waymo vehicle. Unlike Waymo’s proprietary Waymo One app used in other markets, this collaboration allows for direct integration within the familiar Uber interface. Upon being matched, riders have the option to accept the robotaxi or switch to a human-driven ride. Once the Waymo arrives, the Uber app facilitates unlocking the vehicle, opening the trunk, and initiating the trip.
Notably, the cost of robotaxi rides through this service will align with existing UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric fares, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of users.
The partnership between Uber and Waymo delineates clear responsibilities for fleet management. Uber takes charge of essential operational aspects, including the charging, maintenance, and cleaning of the autonomous vehicles, along with managing user access via its app. Waymo, on the other hand, retains oversight of the core autonomous technology and operations, which encompasses roadside assistance and specific aspects of rider support.
This expansion into Atlanta follows the initial announcement in September 2024 of plans to launch robotaxi services in both Austin and Atlanta in early 2025. The “Waymo on Uber” robotaxi service first rolled out in Austin in March 2025, where Waymo currently operates over 100 commercial robotaxis, paving the way for this exciting new chapter in Atlanta’s urban mobility.
