Amazon to spend over $4B to expand Prime delivery to rural communities in the US
Amazon has announced a significant strategic expansion, committing over $4 billion to dramatically enhance its Prime Same-Day and Next-Day delivery services across rural America. This substantial investment is set to reach more than 4,000 small cities and towns throughout the U.S., bringing the convenience of rapid Prime delivery to millions of customers in previously underserved areas.
The e-commerce behemoth aims to triple the size of its delivery network by 2026, a move spurred by the increasing demand for expedited shipping from customers residing in rural communities. Places like Asbury, Iowa; Fort Seneca, Ohio; Lewes, Delaware; North Padre Island, Texas; and Sharptown, Maryland, are among the thousands of locations that will benefit from this accelerated service, bridging the gap in online shopping accessibility.
Beyond customer convenience, this expansion is poised to generate considerable economic opportunities. Amazon anticipates creating an estimated 170 new positions at various delivery stations, along with a multitude of additional driving opportunities, thereby fostering job growth in these rural areas.
The company’s commitment to faster delivery is already yielding impressive results. Amazon reported a surge of over 30% in the number of items delivered the same day or the next day in the U.S., compared to the corresponding period last year. In 2024 alone, an astounding more than 9 billion items were successfully delivered through these accelerated services, underscoring the operational efficiency and growing adoption of faster shipping options among Prime members.
This major announcement precedes Amazon’s much-anticipated Prime Day event, a 96-hour shopping extravaganza scheduled to run from July 8 to July 11, further emphasizing the importance of a robust and widespread delivery infrastructure.
