Instagram to Roll Out Grid Rearrangement and Private Posting Options
Instagram has announced that it will finally allow users to rearrange their grid, a long-awaited feature that gives users more control over their profile’s aesthetic. The social network is also testing a new feature that will allow users to post content privately, without it appearing in their followers’ feeds. In addition, Instagram is launching the ability to stream songs from Spotify directly to Instagram Notes and a new initiative to support emerging creators.
The ability to rearrange the grid has been one of the most requested features by Instagram users. With this update, users can customize the look of their profile by moving posts around. Previously, posts were displayed in chronological order, with pinning being the only way to keep older content at the top.
The purpose of this feature is to allow users to make their grids more visually appealing and highlight specific content. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, mentioned in January that the company was planning to introduce this feature.
Instagram had previously tested this feature in 2022 but put it on hold. Now, in 2025, the company is ready to launch the update.
Regarding the private posting feature, Instagram plans to roll it out soon. Adam Mosseri explained that creative expression can be intimidating, especially when posting to the feed. This new feature aims to make it easier for users to share content without feeling pressured.
This feature is similar to trial reels, which allow creators to test new content without showing it to their followers. Instagram reported that 40% of creators posted Reels more often after trying trial reels, and 80% of them saw their Reels reach more non-followers.
Mosseri stated that the goal of these new features is to give users more flexibility in how and where their content appears, helping them create and share without added pressure.
The new Spotify integration allows users to share songs they are listening to on Spotify to their Instagram Notes.
Instagram also announced Drafts, an initiative to invest in emerging talent by providing support such as financial assistance, connections, co-ideation, and collaboration opportunities. This program aims to support creators’ unique creative projects.
