Tesla’s European Sales Plummet While BYD Surges Ahead
Tesla is facing headwinds in the European market, with sales in the region plummeting nearly 50% year-over-year, according to recent data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. In April, Tesla’s sales across the European Union, European Free Trade Association, and the U.K. totaled 7,261 vehicles, marking a significant 49% decline compared to the same period last year.
This downturn is particularly noteworthy given Tesla’s recent launch of the new Model Y. Typically, new model releases generate increased consumer interest and sales. However, the data suggests that Tesla is not experiencing this typical boost. Industry analysts suggest that CEO Elon Musk’s increasingly visible political stances and alignment with figures like former U.S. President Donald Trump may be alienating European consumers, having an outsized effect on the brand.
While Tesla struggles, the broader European car market is also experiencing shifts. Overall, new car registrations in the EU, U.K., and EFTA countries saw a slight decrease of 0.3% year-over-year in April, totaling 1,077,186 units. Gas and diesel vehicles are primarily responsible for this overall decline.
Electric vehicles (EVs), however, are a bright spot, continuing to expand their market share. In April, EV sales grew by 27.8%, reaching 184,685 vehicles compared to April 2024. Hybrid vehicles experienced even more significant growth, with sales increasing by 31%.
Adding another layer to the story, Chinese EV manufacturers, particularly BYD, are making notable gains in the European market. Data released last week by Jato Dynamics indicates that registrations of EVs from Chinese automakers rose by 59% year-on-year in April, reaching nearly 15,300 units, despite existing tariffs by the EU. This suggests a growing acceptance and demand for Chinese EVs among European consumers.
BYD even outsold Tesla for the first time ever in Europe in April according to JATO Dynamics, signaling a significant shift in the competitive landscape.
